China-Europe Trademark and Copyright Protection Seminar Held in Beijing

China-Europe Trademark and Copyright Protection Seminar held in Beijing on Jun 7, 2006. Vice Minister Ma Xiuhong, Ministry of Commerce of China and EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson attended closing ceremony and delivered speeches.

Ma Xiuhong said, successful holding of the Seminar represented favorable cooperation between China and Europe on IPR protection. She said, China and Europe deeply exchanged views on various subjects under mechanism of IPR protection dialogue and its sub working group meeting system. China comprehensively introduced measures of strengthening on IPR protection since 2006 which further promote mutual understanding between China and Europe and gained favorable effect. She thanked for the experts who unremittingly promoted China's IPR protection, highly praised long-termed cooperation between China and Europe on IPR protection and expected to maintain this cooperation.

Ma Xiuhong expressed that as a developing country, though China still had incompletion on IPR protection, China's government never appeased and indulged the problem. China possessed firm determination and confidence on IPR protection and practiced promise of combating IPR-infringing via actual action. She indicated to evaluate China's legal system on IPR protection should not separate with China's complete framework on IPR protection especially political protection system. Actual national situation and legal system of each country should be respected while stressing IPR protection. It was expected to subjectively and justly evaluate China's legal system on IPR protection by relevant countries. She emphasized that IPR protection became a globalized problem and international IPR protection should mainly operate through cooperation. A bright future of IPR protection would be built while developed countries helped developing countries to strengthen capacity construction of IPR protection; meanwhile developing countries promoted completion of IPR protection system.

Mandelson expressed that EU was aware of the effort and achieved progress China's government and other institutes made in IPR protection in the past years. He thanked the sincerity represented by Chinese officials in this aspect. He said China and Europe had complementarity on economy and trade, EU was willing to help China to make progress on IPR protection under justice and respect of right.

This Seminar was held jointly by Ministry of Commerce of China and EU Directorate General for Trade and almost 100 officials from relevant Chinese and European government, experts and personnel from enterprise circle attended the Seminar.
